Letter from our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Last week I had the opportunity to spend a day with colleagues from the Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Alaska nonprofit state associations. What a treat! We gathered at the Nonprofit Association of Oregon in Portland, wore masks, and talked all day about nonprofit issues including the American Rescue Plan Act, finding funding for policy advocacy work, increasing public trust in nonprofits, COVID fatigue, and managing remote teams.

There is something magical about gathering with colleagues who do similar work. Although our states are all different and our programming varies, we share common values and deeply believe that nonprofits matter. We talked about how to maintain momentum at a time when nonprofit leaders are understandably exhausted. We spoke about leadership turnover which seems to be accelerating, and how to make sure that incoming leaders are supported. We traded stories about how we are making a difference as advocates for nonprofits, including some super wonky tactics that only folks in our field can appreciate.

I hope that you find this type of camaraderie through some of Washington Nonprofits’ events or other avenues, and that you prioritize gathering with peers. We need each other now more than ever. I send my love and support to those of you who are feeling isolated or burned out. The pandemic has been a marathon, so I encourage you to breathe, nourish yourself, and connect as much as you can.

In solidarity,

Laura Pierce

Policy Breakdown: 2021 Nonprofit Economic Impact Report

By Daniel Parkhurst (Director of Policy and Communications)

How do nonprofits contribute to the economic health of our communities? How many jobs are provided by nonprofits? Did you know that nonprofit jobs make up over 7% of all jobs? That’s more jobs than the construction industry or the hospitality industry!

Last week, we released new data regarding jobs and wages of 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Washington State with the release of the new 2021 Nonprofit Economic Impact Report. This data paints a picture of how important nonprofits are to our state. In addition to the report, we have interactive maps online that allow you to zoom in on data for your county and legislative district.

Key Statistics

  • In 2019, 6,557 active 501(c)(3) nonprofits employed 252,949 people.

  • In 2020, nonprofit jobs overall dropped 6% to 238,032 statewide. At the lowest point of the year in May, nonprofit jobs were down 9%.

  • Nonprofits make up 7.31% of the workforce of Washington, more than the construction industry or the hospitality industry.

Community Engagement: Be an Equity Ambassador (PAID)

By Alex Panagotacos (Director of Community Engagement)

In the September Connector we announced the launch of our Equity Ambassador Program. The application is now live and the priority deadline is November 15, so be sure to apply soon.

Equity Ambassadors will be an essential part of Washington Nonprofits’ Community Engagement program. They keep Washington Nonprofits connected to communities across the state. They identify unmet needs, enhance program relevance, and extend the reach of programming within underserved communities.

This is a paid opportunity, and Ambassadors will be classified as independent contractors. Total payment for the 12-week period will be $2,500. We estimate that the scope of work will take 72-96 hours to complete (6-8 hours per week). We are prioritizing recruitment of Equity Ambassadors who have lived experience and connection to Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color, immigrant, rural, LGBTQ2S+ and disability communities. We are also seeking to recruit people from different geographic communities in Washington.

For questions or accessibility requests, please contact Alex Panagotacos (alex@washingtonnonprofits.org or 509-990-6835).

Juneteenth: Beyond June 19

By Sondra Santos (Communications Manager)
Back in June, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jacque Julien, the Executive Director for Communities of Color Coalition (C3). C3 is a grass roots organization comprised of BIPOC leadership, that advocates for social justice in healthcare and education and works to dismantle systemic racism. While their focus has been doing this work in Snohomish County, they’ve been expanding their reach, working throughout the region. C3 helped plan a week of activities to commemorate Juneteenth. I planned to highlight them in our June edition of the Connector. However, as we spoke, it became clear to me that if we are going to move forward with intention and not be performative, recognition of Juneteenth needed to continue beyond June 19. Sure, a day off and social media posts on Juneteenth are nice, but what happens on June 20 or October 19 for that matter?

Learning Log: Return to Work?

By Jennifer Chang (Director of Learning)
We know that reopening continues to be on your mind, and we want to provide useful resources to guide your decisions. In June we hosted a Return to Work webinar and wrote a Washington State Reopens blogpost - both are still relevant. Now, we are pleased to share two new tools: our Safety & Health in Nonprofits COVID-19 Workplace Safety Checklist and COVID-19 Workplace Safety Sample Policy. In our latest blogpost, we outline a few considerations to keep in mind as you review these new tools and other COVID-19 safety resources.

We recognize the virulence and spread of the Delta variant was discouraging and raised the level of uncertainty again. We hope these tools help your nonprofit assess your readiness for workers, clients, and visitors to return to the workplace. We want to support your organization in creating a COVID-19 safety policy that works for your team and is in compliance with Washington Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) requirements.
